Yvonne Canu, born in 1921 in Meknes (Morocco), is a French neo-impressionist painter known for her pointillist paintings.
She began her artistic training at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, but her studies were interrupted by World War II. During the conflict, she worked as a nurse in North Africa before returning to Paris after the Liberation. Settling in Montmartre, she frequented established artists such as Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita, Elisée Maclet, François Gall who introduced her to plein air painting and the principles of Impressionism. She continued her training at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, alongside artists such as Ossip Zadkine.
In 1955, Yvonne Canu turned definitively to Neo-Impressionism, influenced by her discovery of Georges Seurat's work A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. She then adopted a pointillist technique, using juxtaposed touches of color to create vibrant and luminous compositions. Her favorite subjects were landscapes and seascapes, particularly those of the French Riviera, such as Saint-Tropez, Collioure, and the bay of Saint-Raphaël.
Yvonne Canu's work is characterized by a bright color palette and a poetic atmosphere, capturing the light and mood of the places she painted.
She worked in this style (pointillism) for most of her life, until her death in 2007 in Fréjus, France.
The peaceful port of Saint-Tropez is captured with serene precision in this oil on canvas by French post-impressionist Yvonne Canu. Boats are peacefully nestled there, one with its sails lowered, the other carrying a fisherman on board. Magnificent colorful buildings stand in the background, creating a picturesque setting. This scene, both calm and vibrant, demonstrates the artist's ability to evoke tranquility and beauty through her creative freedom and iconic style.
