"Three Drawings, Two Of Which Are Watercolors, Adorn The Coachbuilder Mûlhbacher"
Three drawings, two of them watercolors, depicting horse-drawn carriages around 1880. The drawing with handwritten annotations, including "Manufacture de voitures Mühlbacher, 63 avenue des Champs Elysées," is very creased but has no tears. Mühlbacher is described by the coachbuilder's guide in 1889 as "the oldest and largest firm in Paris." It was founded in 1797 by Godefroy (Georges-Geoffroy) Mühlbacher, born in Strasbourg in 1767 to a family originating from the Duchy of Württemberg. He settled in Paris as a wheelwright at 14 rue de la Planche in 1814; for nearly 120 years, this firm was one of the jewels of Parisian coachbuilding.
