Watercolor portrait of a horse, signed Jacques Cartier. Jacques Cartier (1907-2001) was a French artist. A painter, sculptor, engraver, medalist, illustrator, and decorator, in 1922, at the age of only 15, he was accepted into the Salon des Artistes Français, where he exhibited every year until 1940. He won the prestigious Rosa Bonheur Prize and numerous gold and silver medals. He worked with Édouard Marcel Sandoz, the founder of the Société Française des Artistes Animaliers (French Society of Animal Artists), and later in the studio of Paul Jouve. His life, spent between studios and exhibitions, was also punctuated by numerous decorative commissions for the most prestigious venues of Parisian high society.
