Large Pewter Platter With Coat Of Arms - Besançon, 18th Century
Artist: Non Identifié
Free shipping within mainland France via La Poste or Mondial Relay
**************
Large ROUND pewter platter, partially forged, with a molded rim, decorated in the center with a complex alliance coat of arms surmounted by a plumed helmet.
Hallmarks:
1° - Very faint quality mark with the city's arms (eagle with columns) and the inscription COM(VN) (pour étain commun)
2° - Oval maker's mark with a corded rim, incompletely applied: (crowned hammer) / 171(-), received between 1710 and 1719. Diameter: 42.5 cm.
Besançon, first half of the 18th century.
In very good condition.
The typology of these two fragmentary hallmarks is, however, perfectly Besançon-specific and leaves no doubt as to its geographical origin.
The quality of the engraving is remarkably fine, a rare find at this level.
Heraldic research :
On the left, these are the arms of the Courlet de Vregille family, originally from the Doubs region and settled in Franche-Comté, which are "azure, a fess argent surmounted by two mullets or, flanked by a rose or, and in base a heart or flanked by two fleurs-de-lis or."
On the right, they are "azure, a tower argent, masoned sable, open and pierced of the field, the gateway arched; in the dexter chief, azure, a sword argent palewise."
de Salins la Tour family is plausible.
Warning : The following attributions are based on information gathered from the websites Webaldic, Geneanet, and ChatGpt. I should point out that the attribution of the sinister coat of arms is disputed by an internet user claiming to be a descendant of the de Vrégille family, who pointed out a difference in the charges, namely that the heart placed at the base is not flowered on the Courlet de Vrégille family coat of arms.
