Oil on canvas, signed lower left by Henri-André Martin, depicting St. Mark's Square in Venice, Italy. Titled "Venice" on the reverse, and bearing an old exhibition label from the Maison des Arts.
St. Mark's Square (named after the evangelist, Christian patron saint of Venice, Saint Mark) is located on the Grand Canal and forms the heart of the city of Venice. It is home to St. Mark's Basilica, St. Mark's Campanile, and the Doge's Palace.
Henri André Martin (1918-2004) was a physician, but also an artist who painted throughout his life. He was awarded the Maurice Utrillo Prize in 1964 and received the Medal of Honor from the Lyon Society of Fine Arts. He participated in numerous exhibitions in galleries in France and abroad (New York, Frankfurt, Geneva, etc.). In the 1980s, Provence and especially the Alpilles provided him with a source of intense inspiration and an evolution towards much more abstract canvases.
