Village Of Argentat-sur-dordogne By Jean Gerard Carrère (1922-2015)
Oil on canvas, signed lower right JGCarrère, depicting the picturesque village of Argentat-sur-Dordogne on the banks of the river. Jean-Gérard Carrère (1922-2015) A young graduate of the Bordeaux School of Fine Arts, where he studied under Roganeau, Jean-Gérard Carrère chose early on to teach drawing. A member of the Salon des Artistes Français from 1952, he held numerous solo exhibitions in Paris, London, and Bordeaux, as well as group exhibitions in Saint-Raphaël, Paris, Bordeaux (Septemvir), and Collioure, where he met Picasso in 1954. During his many travels, he painted the old quarters of Dutch cities, and landscapes in Germany, Scandinavia, and Spain. He was often inspired by his region, his city of Bordeaux, and the Arcachon Basin, but also by the Basque Country, Provence, and the Pyrenees. His techniques were infinitely varied: oil, gouache, Watercolor, enhanced drawing, India ink. The themes he explored included landscapes, seascapes, still lifes, and portraits. His painting is characterized by a search for simplified forms and a freedom of color that is fresh and vibrant. Several of his canvases have been acquired by museums in Bordeaux and Saint-Raphaël.
