THIS OBJECT WAS SOLD
Pewter Water Pitcher - Versailles, 18th Century
A pewter water jug in the shape of a baluster with a stepped foot, a flared rim, and a molded neck. It has a caterpillar handle, a thumb rest, and a rolled base.
Marked by Augustin Loir : hammer / (sun) / A.L / P (P for Paris).
Height: 19.5 cm.
VERSAILLES, mid-18th century.
This master craftsman, admitted to Paris in 1716, settled in Versailles in 1718 and continued to use his Parisian hallmark.
Given the absence of a control mark, this water jug was most likely made in central Versailles, for which we have never found any control marks.
In very good condition and of very high quality.
Bibliography:
"Pewter and Master Pewterers of Paris - 1643-1791" by Philippe Boucaud.
"Pewter Pottery in France" in 6 volumes, by Roger Verdier.
