Collection Of Neapolitan Nativity Figures
In the 18th century, Naples became the European center of the artistic nativity scene. Under the Bourbon dynasty, the “Presepi napoletani” (Naples nativity figures) reached an unparalleled level of refinement: artisans blended popular realism with religious devotion. The faces of the terracotta figurines, sometimes adorned with glass eyes, convey human emotions—fervor, joy, wonder, humility—with striking precision. Each face was a character study, inspired by ordinary people as much as by sacred figures. The set presented here, composed of thirteen heads, evokes the atmosphere of an 18th-century Neapolitan workshop: the beginnings of a collective masterpiece where art, faith, and theater converge. Presented on a double 19th-century painted wooden base.
