Chest Of Drawers Stamped Jm. Petit (1737-1817), 18th Century
Superb Louis XV chiffonier, stamped Jean-Marie Petit, dating from the 18th century. It has an inventory number. The front features three marquetry drawers decorated with a fan of flowers. The top is also decorated with a pretty bouquet of flowers. It rests on four slightly cabriole legs. It measures 40 cm long, 31 cm wide, and 70 cm high. It is in excellent condition. Jean-Marie Petit (1737 - January 14, 1817), cabinetmaker, became a master on March 5, 1777. He was the son of Jean Petit. This craftsman supplied the Crown Furniture Repository with screen frames, bedside tables, and commodes for the châteaux of Compiègne and Fontainebleau. Jean-Marie Petit worked on Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine, in a house belonging to one of his sisters, Elizabeth Adrienne. She had married the master cabinetmaker Jean Georges Schlichtig, originally from Bavaria. He married Marie-Rose Damoye, with whom he had two children: a daughter, Marie-Rose, and a son, Jean-Nicolas, who also became a cabinetmaker. Jean-Marie Petit left his mark on some lovely pieces of veneered wood, such as a small commode with a curved front that was in Madame de Bella's collection. After his father, Jean Petit, died, he appears to have used the same stamping tool that his father had employed, as the stamp J. PETIT is found on pieces from a later period, too late to have been made by the original holder of the hallmark.
