Glazed Ceramic Basin On Pedestal, Vallauris Golfe Juan

Artist: Vallauris

Monumental glazed ceramic bowl on a column from Vallauris–Golf-Juan

  • Trou de drainage central, indiquant que la vasque a été conçue comme jardinière ou cache-pot monumental.
  • Fabrication moulée en série artisanale, puis décorée à la main.
  • Large decorative bowl on a glazed ceramic pedestal, crafted in Vallauris–Golf-Juan, France, likely made in the second half of the 20th century.

The piece consists of a large hemispherical bowl resting on an elegant baluster column.
The bowl features a rich polychrome decoration of grapevines in relief and large stylized vine leaves, rendered in deep green, brown, and ochre tones on a background ranging from golden honey to reddish brown.
The decoration is enhanced by a glossy glaze that accentuates the reliefs and lends the piece a beautiful depth.

The upper rim, with a wide flange, is decorated with alternating green and ochre bands, while a fine pattern of dots highlights the upper frieze.
The raised grape clusters form the main decorative element and evoke the Mediterranean iconography characteristic of many Vallaur pieces.

The slender column is adorned with a molded design of vertical leaves in slight relief.
Its gradient glazing blends shades of amber yellow, caramel, and purplish brown, creating a particularly decorative marbled effect.

The piece is hand-signed beneath the basin:

“Vallauris Golfe Juan”

This signature indicates a piece produced in the ceramic tradition of Vallauris, a major center of French ceramics that experienced considerable artistic growth from the 1950s to the 1970s.
The designation “Vallauris Golfe-Juan” was frequently used by various workshops and manufacturers in the region, though it did not always identify a specific ceramist. Vallauris is recognized as one of France’s leading centers for artistic and decorative ceramics.
