Like all painters of the Barbizon School, Charles Jacques worked from nature for both his paintings and his engravings and etchings. He specialized in painting sheep and sheepfolds, producing a body of work characterized by its solid realism. An attentive and amused observer of poultry, he captured the nervousness of hens and roosters with great attention to detail. He wrote and illustrated a rare and curious little booklet on this subject, "The Henhouse," in 1869. He also distinguished himself in his mastery of capturing the transparency of skies, in both gray and clear weather. A painter and etcher of great talent, Charles JACQUE is a leading figure of the Barbizon school, whose renown still shines today.
