Shako of the 1st Hussar Regiment, Type 1812. First Empire. Felt body, black waxed leather crown; a leather girdle is sewn to the bottom of the felt, with a brass buckle and prong at the rear, and below this buckle a simple calfskin gusset for easy adjustment. A rounded visor of black patent cowhide. A stamped iron plate on the front depicts a crowned imperial eagle, its base in the shape of a shield with the number "1" cut out in the center. A tricolor painted leather cockade is placed above the plate and attached to the body by a clasp on each side. Chinstraps: on each side of the shako is a chin strap made of lined sheepskin, to which tin scales are attached (one scale is missing). A rosette stamped with a star in the center. Above the pretty cockade, a scarlet pompom. The interior lining is made of sheepskin and topped with a thick ecru canvas. In good condition. France. First Empire.
