Helder DE CARVALHO (1954 - ) Considered one of Portugal's most talented contemporary sculptors, Helder DE CARVALHO's works are collected and highly sought after. This superb and impressive erotic bronze plaque depicts a reclining, nude Spartan warrior with a shield. Signed and dated (1991) at the bottom, plus the foundry mark. The work is superb! The foot, calf, and shield, which extend beyond the frame and detach themselves from the work, give extraordinary power and movement to this erotic Hellenistic composition. Dimensions: 58 x 29 x 3.5 (D) cm. Weight: 10 kg. Helder de Carvalho was born in 1954. He lives and works in the city of Porto, Portugal. He graduated in Fine Arts from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Porto, where he studied under Alberto Carneiro, Zulmiro de Carvalho, Fernando Pernes, Flavio Goncalves, Alvaro Lapa, and Jorge Pinheiro. He is involved in art education as a teacher in secondary and higher education, having previously worked as a teaching assistant in the field of visual and technological education at the Higher School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança. He earned his Master's degree in Art, Craft, and Design Education from Roehampton University in London, in partnership with the University of Minho. Later, he taught at the Higher School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo. He is the creator of numerous sculptures in public spaces, displayed throughout the country. His work is represented in public institutions and private collections. He is referenced in specialized journals and dictionaries. Helder de Carvalho is a versatile artist whose professional career reflects his dedication to the world of fine art.
