"Catalan “capipote” Virgin "

Polychrome wooden “capipote” Virgin, Spain or Southern France, 19th century. Carved in the round, this delicate figure depicts the Virgin standing on the globe, vanquishing the serpent, a symbol of evil, according to the iconography of the Immaculate Conception. The head, hands, and feet are finely modeled, with gentle features and a serene gaze. These statues, known as “capipote” (from the Catalan expression cap i pota, “head and feet”), were dressed in real clothing and intended for private devotion or processions.
