These plaques depicting lions holding a sword in their raised paws are the symbol of the Kingdom of Kandy, the kingdom based in central Sri Lanka (Ceylon), and were used on royal pennants and to denote the king's property. The Kingdom of Kandy was an independent kingdom on the island of Sri Lanka, located in the central and eastern parts of the island. It was founded in the late 15th century and lasted until the British occupation in the 19th century. The plaques are made of chased brass.
