"Medieval Pilgrim's Ampoule With The Bethlehem Cross And Fleur-de-lis"

Medieval pilgrim's ampoule, 14th-15th centuries, made of lead or tin, bearing the Bethlehem cross and fleurs-de-lis. The eight-pointed Bethlehem cross is engraved over other coats of arms of cities where relics were kept. Pilgrim's ampoules were small, flattened gourds with two small handles for wearing around the neck. The ampoule bore inscriptions indicating the holy site visited. Inside, the ampoule contained blessed oil, water, earth, textile fibers, and wood, all related to the pilgrimage undertaken.
