"Utagawa Hiroshige "pilgrims On Their Way To The Village On The Tokkaido Road" Japan 1855"
Utagawa Hiroshige "Pilgrims Going to the Village on the Tokkaido Road", print from 1855, Meiji period. These Chirimen-e type prints are published on crepe paper very close to fabric and required a different production technique from classic prints. They would have appeared as early as the 1800s in Japan. They remained in their representations identical to the original subjects of the artists although published in smaller formats. Many classics of Hiroshige for example were made in Chirimen-e. This is the print "Pilgrims Going to the Village", from the series Famous Places of the Fifty-three Stations or the Vertical Tokkaido. Edition of 1855 Two snags in the paper. Under original glass
