"Spanish School (c. 1620) - Penitence Of The Magdalene"
Oil on panel. Support reinforced with strips of canvas. Good overall condition, with no overpainting or restorations visible under ultraviolet light. In this small-format composition, probably from a private devotional work, the stylistic influence of a famous engraving by Hendrick Goltzius is evident. The impeccable, delicate, and highly precise brushwork perfectly renders the attributes of a penitent Magdalene who, like the one in the Flemish engraving, modestly covers her breast. This magnificent Spanish panel from the early 17th century combines Italian-inspired modeling with compositions borrowed from the Northern European repertoire, in a synthesis that would take on particular significance for Castilian artists. Dimensions of the image without frame: 28 x 32 cm / 35 x 39.5 cm with a magnificent antique corbelled frame.
