Elegant polychrome painted enamel plaque depicting Saint Francis of Assisi in meditation, holding the cross of Christ and displaying the stigmata. Possibly attributed to Nicolas Laudin. Second Half of the 17th century.
Description:
At his feet, the skull, a symbol of vanity, recalls meditation on death and eternal life.
The scene is set within an oval medallion bordered with rocaille scrolls in relief, highlighted in gold against a dark background.
The inscription in a cartouche at the bottom of the composition reads "SAINT FRANCIS."
The midnight blue counter-enamel, typical of 18th-century Limoges production, confirms its attribution to the Limoges school, heir to the Renaissance enameling tradition.
Exquisite work, with well-preserved colors and a balanced composition, reflecting a Franciscan iconography highly prized in the conventual devotion of the Age of Enlightenment.
Dimensions: Height: 9.4 cm x 7.5 cm.
Condition:
A few marginal chips and tiny enamel losses, not affecting the subject.
