"Boutis Foot Warmer In Marseille Quilting And Count's Crown - Provence 17th Century"
Late 17th century Provence Foot cover or Petassoun in Marseille embroidery with the arms of a double head of a bird of Paradise with a count's crown and four lions in the corners. Origin of the unidentified Provençal nobility. Work of Marseille stitching embroidered with boutis called "vermicelli". Backstitch embroidery of wicked cotton between two surfaces of white cotton. Note the knot stitch embroidery at the level of the lions! Abundant decoration of foliage, motifs from India and birds of paradise (?). The bottom band appears to be originally sewn and tucked in. Note the "repair" in one of the corners appears to be original because the thread used is the same! Very different from the Italian Trappunto technique. Clean, immaculate white. Excellent condition. Dimensions: 82 cm high X 78 cm wide.
