Wooden frame (with signs of wear); Frame dimensions: 41 x 47 cm; Mixed media on paper (gouache, oil, pastel), signed. Dimensions: 20 x 25 cm. Provenance: Collection of Vidal de Saint Germain, presented by the Mayflower Art Gallery, Bussum, Netherlands. Jaap Stellaart (1920-1992) established himself as an abstract painter and draftsman with a unique and experimental style shortly after the Second World War. In the 1950s, he joined the post-Cobra group Creatie and exhibited in the United States and abroad with artists such as Karel Appel, Armando, Eugene Brands, Corneille, and Anton Rooskens. Stellaart was a very introverted man; he aspired to reach as many people as possible with his art, but he was largely disconnected from the art world, its major exhibitions, its obligations, and the pressure to perform. He rejected the path to great success and led a secluded life in the Zaan region until his death in 1992.
