Chaudet depicted the emperor as an antique herm, signing the work below the inscription "Napoléon." It was chosen by Napoleon as his official sculptural portrait and produced in two sizes, one "first-size" and a smaller one, intended for desks in the royal offices or sent as a diplomatic gift.
Ours, in terms of size, is one of the smaller examples, but its quality is nevertheless good. A small professional restoration to the tip of the nose, commissioned by the previous owners, is noteworthy.
