"Pair Of Large Silver-gilt Jardiniere Swans – Germany, Late 19th Century "
Pair of large silver-gilt jardiniere swans – Germany, late 19th century Superb pair of finely chiseled solid silver swans, forming true naturalistic jardinieres. Each swan, admirably modeled, has a long arched neck and finely sculpted wings that can be spread or closed, depending on the desired setting. The chiseling work is exceptionally fine: each feather is rendered with a lively and meticulous relief, reflecting all the expertise of German goldsmiths of the late 19th century. The interior of the bodies is gilt, which allows these pieces to be used both as decorative table elements – jardinieres, centerpieces or baskets – as well as containers for foodstuffs (candied fruit, sweets, sugared almonds, etc.). Their size and the quality of their execution make them rare pieces, far superior to the more common small models of salt cellar swans.
