Silver And Gilt Ciborium, France, Martin, 19th Century
This beautifully crafted silver ciborium from France is gilded on the inside. It consists of the following elements: the base, the centerpiece, the openwork ornamentation around the chalice, the chalice itself, and the lid.
The whole is beautifully decorated with vine and grape motifs. The openwork rim has a decoration of grapes and grapes, each in the shape of a heart (three times). Between two hearts, cherub heads in relief (also three times).
The ciborium bears two hallmarks on each side: on the lid, the rim of the chalice, and the base. That is, six hallmarks in total. There is the maker's mark "Martin" and a "Mercury head" for 925/1000 silver. The maker's mark "Martin" probably refers to a Parisian silversmith. (Perhaps Martin Berton?, Martin/Martial?, Martin et Pierre?, or Martin Ernest)
This ciborium is of very fine quality; the gold plating is even perfect. There is a very small piece of rim silver missing from one heart (of the openwork edge). Please check the detailed picture.
Dimensions:
Height: 26.5 cm
Base width: 12 cm
Lid width: 10 cm
Weight: 340 grams
Please feel free to ask me any questions. Thank you for visiting my shop. Kind regards, Ben
