Pair of plaques with gilt bronze profiles, from the Netherlands around 1650, depicting the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ in profile. Surrounding text: Profile of Mary: MATER . IESU . CHRISTI . Profile of Jesus: EGO . SUM . VIA . VERITAS . ET . VITAL Christ is depicted bareheaded with long hair falling over his shoulders. These medallions are attributed to Pierre Goret, a medallist active in the Southern Netherlands in the mid-17th century and seem to have been inspired by the work of the 16th century Italian medallist Antonio Abondio. They were framed during the 19th century. Frame and Marie-Louise in blackened oak, a gilded band between the two enhances the contrast. Height of the bas-reliefs alone: 19 cm Width: 14.5 cm
