This Post-Impressionist painting depicting figures on a harbor promenade on the French Riviera was created by the Russian-born French painter André Petroff (1894–1975, Nice).
This work is a representative example of Petroff's Nice period, during which he brilliantly combined Russian artistic traditions with the cultural dynamism of the French Riviera.
André Petroff (1894–1975) – an artist from the Russian émigré movement. Born in Saint Petersburg, Russia. He studied at the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts (in Russian ТЗХ) from 1909 to 1914. He received a gold medal and a diploma as a drawing teacher. During his studies, he devoted himself to interior design and stage design. He made a notable debut at the International Exhibition of Graphics and Printing (1914, Leipzig). He moved to Paris (1919), then entered the École des Beaux-Arts (1920), where he studied with F. Cormon. He moved to Nice (1923). He made numerous trips to Corsica (1930), Morocco, Algeria (1931-1932), Italy (1935-1938). He participated in group exhibitions in Nice (1937-1943), on the Côte d'Azur (1947-1951), Monte Carlo (1958), London (1960) and Rome (1968-1969). His solo exhibitions took place in Nice (1927, 1929, 1935, 1971), Paris (1935, 1936), The Hague (1936-1938, 1953, 1954, 1956) and Cagnes-sur-Mer (France). He practiced easel painting and watercolors. He painted landscapes, still lifes and portraits.
His favorite motifs were the old streets and ports of Nice, as well as views of the Netherlands with their windmills.
His works are exhibited in museums in Nice, Grenoble, The Hague and elsewhere.
