He considers himself a self-taught artist, although he learned to paint at a young age under the guidance of his father. The artist specializes in painting landscapes, nudes, and portraits; among all his subjects, he is most famous for his works depicting Hanoi's Old Quarter, the same theme that had brought his late father international recognition. Phuong attempted to emulate his father's artistic touch but gradually developed his own personal style and visual vocabulary in his depiction of the streets of Hanoi."
