Tapestry "verdure With Pagoda", Aubusson 18th Century
- This tapestry offers us an open window onto an exotic landscape with lush vegetation: a flowering tree rises to its full height and blossoms horizontally, guiding the eye towards the pagoda in the background. The scene is enlivened by a bird in full flight in the sky on the left, architectural elements of ruins on the right also contribute to the picturesqueness of the composition. This arrangement, with these "plant columns" is frequently found in the Verdures called "à pagode" or "in the style of Jean Pillement" widely woven in Aubusson in the 18th century (see Pascal-François BERTRAND's work "Aubusson Tapisseries des lumières"). These evoke fantasized landscapes mixing fauna, flora and exotic architecture. Their development goes hand in hand with the taste of the time for the imagery of distant countries, fashionable in Europe from the end of the 17th century, in particular that of China.
- This tapestry, made of wool and silk, presents beautifully fresh colors, including strong greens and shades of red in the flowers that cheerfully punctuate the composition.
