Biedermeier Secretary, Probably Berlin, Early 19th Century
Representative Biedermeier secretaire, featuring supporting columns with bases and capitals gilded in fine gold. The body is veneered in matching mahogany and hand-polished. Resting on square legs, the lower section comprises three lockable drawers, surmounted by a drop-leaf top with an additional drawer above. The structure is crowned by a classical Schinkel-style pediment with a raised, tiered platform. Decorative mounts in the form of laurel wreaths adorn the corners above the columns, while the drawer fronts are fitted with handles terminating in lion protomes. The interior is designed as an architectural composition: a central compartment with a mirrored back, stylized rustication, and a veneered burlwood floor, flanked by a set of small drawers.
