He trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris with Jean Léon Gérôme. Despite his talent and success in France, his art was not fully appreciated in his native country. He exhibited numerous times at the Salon des Artistes Français and the National Academy of Design. Specializing in marine and harbor views, he traveled extensively to draw inspiration from the ports of France, Holland, and England. In 1889, he was awarded the silver medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition and was awarded the Legion of Honor after his death. His works can be seen at the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Meudon, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Musée d'Orsay.
