French Silver And Gilt Chalice, Matching Patina, 20th Century
This similarly patinated early 20th-century French chalice is a work of art in its own right. It is still accompanied by its original case. The cup bears two inscriptions. On the chalice: Hic. Est. Enim. Calix. Sanguinis. Mei. Qui. Pro. Vobis. Effundetur, which means: "For this is the chalice of my blood, shed for you and for many." These words are spoken by the priest when consecrating the wine during the celebration of Holy Mass. Below, on the central knob: Ego. Sum. Vigis. Vos. Palmites. Which is Latin for: "I am the vine, you are the branches." The underside of the cup is decorated with three highly detailed representations, a red glass stone, and a binding rim. These depict the Nativity, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection. The silver patina features a magnificent engraving of a haloed Jesus, a reference to his divinity. The patina bears two silver hallmarks: a Mercury head and a maker's mark. The top of the chalice bears the same hallmarks. The foot bears two or three hallmarks, but they are difficult to read.
