Large 18th Century German Executioner's Axe
Large German Century Executioners Axe 1700’s
This early and superb example of an Executioners axe from the 1700’s, this type of axe being used for beheading and originating from Germany.
This example has a very wide cutting edge and is engraved with script and engravings on either side. The engravings include a gallows with three individuals hanging and the second engraving is of the wheel of justice. These types of engravings are commonly found on sword but not many axes.
This axe is rather large and has long wooden shaft which is formed and also has the remanence of some form of wood worm which has been treated. The handle would have had some protective coat or lacquer.

The ax head is 29.5cm with a cutting edge of 24.8 cm.
