Burgundian Visconti Helmet From The 6th To The 17th Century
16th – 17th Century Italian Viscontea Burgonet Close Helmet
This rarely seen example of Italian fine art!.
Produced at the end of the 16th century this Viscontea helmet featured advance protection for the wearer.
Made from the finest master armourers in the Northern region of Italy, these armourers would have produced the finest sets for the nobility and upper echelons of the government. These masters would have used their talents to combine their passion for creating protective armour used for the art of war while still still creating a work of art.
This style was also produced in other regions such as the French and the Dutch, however it is the Italian armourers which were by far the most skilled and they produced the rarest examples. Most of the known complete sets are in the largest Italian and Foreign museums in the world. Occasionally you see an example on the market but these are scarce and the majority of the time they are their counterparts.
Detail of the skull show elongated grooves that stream down the length of the skull cap in a near perfect placement, with embellished brass rivets and plum holder. These same brass rivets adorning the gorget.
The helmet functions and operates perfectly with the locking hook still in place.
The ventilated face is engraved in the same style with ten ventilated ports.
This combat closed helmet while decorated had one purpose which is to offer its wearer advanced protection and would have been made for a high ranking officer or nobleman.
A superb example of Italian armour, perfect for any Museum.
