Pair of Carved Walnut Bas-Reliefs - 17th Century Religious Spiritual Object - Jesus and the Virgin Mary
Originally located in a chapel or church, these bas-reliefs were likely mounted in their current frames during the 19th century, specifically between 1815 and 1850.
The sculpture exhibits high quality craftsmanship, notably in the Christ's hair, rendered with flowing, comma-shaped curls that convey movement and grace. The Virgin's relief features a more "rustic" charm, characterized by full, fleshy cheeks and a swelling beneath the neck, a round and ample face typical of 17th-century female representations.
Crafted from walnut wood, these pieces are in a very good state of preservation. Worthy of note is a crack on the Virgin's bust and some discrete losses on the Christ, particularly around the nose area. The frames are adorned with laurel garlands and delicate touches of gilding.
