Henri Lachièze-rey (1927 – 1974), Nude, 1964
Artist: Henri Lachièze-rey (caluire Et Cuire, 1927 – Lyon, 1974)
Oil on canvas. Signed upper right. 60 × 20 cm.
Born in Caluire (Rhône) in 1927, Henri Lachièze-Rey trained at the Écoles des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and Paris. He spent time in Nice and Tuscany before settling in Saint-Romain-au-Mont-d’Or in 1961. Closely associated with Georges Adilon, Cottavoz, Fusaro, and Truphémus, he belonged to the “Sanzistes” generation. Retrospectives of his work were held at the Musée Paul-Dini in Villefranche-sur-Saône in 2003 and at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon in 2025.
This Nude from 1964 captures the artist’s most intimate sensibility. Within a narrow, vertical format, the female body stands frontally, shaped by a dense and quivering impasto. The contours dissolve into a harmony of muted greys, greens, and soft blues, while the face emerges faintly through the layered surface. The diffuse light slides across the reliefs, revealing the almost mineral texture of the paint.
Balancing between figuration and abstraction, Lachièze-Rey lets the flesh emerge from the material itself, in a quiet and restrained tension. The painting conveys a poetics of presence, where the human figure becomes the mysterious mirror of a modest interior life.
