Marcel Saint-jean (1914 - 1994), Mount Cindre (lyon)
Artist: Saint-jean Marcel (lyon, 1914 – Id. 1994)
Oil on canvas. Signed lower left. 54 × 73 cm.
Nephew of the painter Émile Didier, a member of the Ziniars group, Marcel SAINT-JEAN was early imbued with the Lyonnaise sensibility, rooted in the discipline of drawing and the search for chromatic harmony.
Exhibiting from 1934 at the Salon du Sud-Est, and later at the Salon des Indépendants, he presented landscapes of the Rhône, the Saône, and the hills surrounding Lyon.
His painting, initially characterized by precise outlines and muted tones, gradually evolved toward a freer and more luminous handling of matter. The thick impasto, animated by tight, rhythmic strokes, conveys the vibration of light and the emotion of landscape within a mode akin to expressionism.
In this view of Mont Cindre, the artist captures the verdant slopes overlooking Saint-Cyr-au-Mont-d’Or. The composition, built through juxtaposed color planes, blends the tender green of meadows with the ochre of rooftops and the red accents of the church tower. Dynamic hatching enlivens the surface, while the sky, streaked with white and blue, extends this luminous energy.
The balance between structure and spontaneity gives the landscape a familiar intensity, expressing the painter’s deep sensitivity to light.
His works are held in several public collections, including the Fondation Renaud.
