Adolphe Deteix (1892–1967), Inner Theatre – Composition With Mannequins

Artist: Deteix Adolphe (amplepuis, 1892 – Id., 1967)
Oil on panel. Artist’s stamp lower left. 60 × 73 cm.

Born in Amplepuis and trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Adolphe Deteix divided his life between the capital and the Lyon region, where he spent his summers. He exhibited at the Salons of Paris and Lyon, blending close observation of reality with a poetic imagination. Flowers are a recurring motif in his work, several examples of which are held in public collections (the French Senate, the Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon). The author of religious frescoes— notably in Vénissieux and Barcelonnette— he at times explored a style bordering on surrealism, revealing the poet as much as the painter.

This poetic dimension is reflected in the present composition, where Deteix stages a studio interior that is both tangible and mysterious. On a table, a wooden mannequin sits upon a stack of books, extending its hand to a bird perched on its fingers. Beside them, a vivid bouquet enlivens the space. In the background, a half-drawn curtain reveals a second figure, while a volcano ignites the horizon. To the left, a key hanging from a string introduces a note of strangeness— a sign awaiting interpretation.

Through the juxtaposition of the animate and the inanimate, of calm and fire, Deteix composes a scene that is at once precise and enigmatic, where still life becomes a meditation on creation itself.
