A student of Othon Friesz and Yves Brayer at the Grande Chaumière studios, where he began working at the age of fourteen, he participated in the “Under Thirty” and “Autumn” salons starting in 1942. Beginning in 1945, he held regular solo exhibitions in Paris, Switzerland, and the United States. He won the first Prix des Amateurs d’Art in 1952. He paints, in thick impasto, acrobatic figures, valets, newlyweds, melancholic landscapes, ironically grotesque funerals, and still lifes that are either old-fashioned or, conversely, sensuous. In the 1980s, he lightened his palette and gave free rein to his humor, creating compositions with great freedom in their layout. Nicknamed “the painter of the human comedy,” he is associated with the figurative movement of the Jeune Peinture within the École de Paris.
