"Embroidery Of Chenillettes (velvety Threads) And Painted On Silk, Representing Saint Antoine l'Abbey"
Saint Anthony is often depicted next to a pig wearing a bell around its neck. This iconographic representation is linked to the fact that the ancient hospitaller order of the Antonines raised pigs, whose fat was used to anoint patients suffering from ergotism. The embroidery is exquisite, highlighting the details of the saint's clothing, the delicate expressions, and the richness of the colors. The whole is framed in a magnificent verre églomisé, signed by Hoeth in Lyon, a renowned merchant and manufacturer of engravings and decorations in the early 19th century. Églomisé, a technique consisting of painting the back of the glass to create ornamental patterns, gives exceptional depth and brilliance to this work. The original gilt frame, from the Charles X period, features refined ornamentation and remarkable chasing. Condition: Embroidery: in excellent condition, with no tears or alterations to the silk. Verre églomisé: in perfect condition, with a visible signature. Frame: Original frame with period patina, in very good condition, with small losses on the edge of the inner part of the frame
