Trained at the Beaux-Arts in Marseille, he then came to Paris to perfect his skills with Jules Lefèvre, Benjamin Constant, and Jean-Paul Laurens. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1890 and became a member in 1900. He won several awards there before receiving a gold medal at the 1920 Salon.
The works of Charles Signoret (Simone's grandfather!), clearly related to Post-Impressionism, were long imbued with the colors of his native Midi. The clientele of his Parisian studio consisted mainly of Marseille bourgeoisie and shipowners who commissioned seascapes and sunsets to decorate their apartments.
He didn't only paint Provence! He also painted in Brittany as evidenced by the prize-winning work in 1920 (return of boats to Piriac sur mer) depicting Piriac as well as our painting, which shows a very beautiful richness of colors (clouds, sails, surface of the water and houses, etc.);
