He quickly revealed a talent for drawing and his first teachers encouraged him to enroll at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. A scholarship holder in 1885, he followed the courses of Jean-Léon Gérôme who detected the young man's talent. He attended the classes of François Flameng and became friends with Édouard Detaille. He specialized in history painting, particularly the Napoleonic epic. From 1887 to 1914, he participated in the Salon des Artistes Français. He received medals and travel grants. His discovery of Spain, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Africa, and especially Egypt provided him with sources of inspiration. He used all techniques: oil, watercolor, gouache, charcoal, pastel. He was a colorist in his way of treating light. Maurice Orange died of typhoid fever in Paris on February 28, 1916.
