Reliquary Paperolles With Gouache Of Jacob's Ladder - Circa 1700
A fine monastery work from the very beginning of the 18th century in excellent condition. This is an original representation of Jacob's ladder found on a gouache in the central medallion. If the Biblical ladder teaches us "that there is nothing but the house of God and this is the gate of heaven", our ladder, of the new Covenant, also leads us there, through the Sacred Heart.
A less frightening vision than that offered by the Holy Scriptures. The theme of Jacob's ladder is essential in the Old Testament but its representation is rarer in the New. This is, without doubt, the true originality of this beautiful piece. Above and below this medallion, there are two relics of Saints, the first is a relic of Saint John, the calligraphy of the second is difficult to read.
In an elegant finely carved and gilded wooden frame from the same period, with old wormholes.
Piece cleaned.
Dimensions of 30 cm by 25 cm and 5 deep.
