Tempera On Paper: “the Fainting Of Esther” By Antoine Coypel
Artist: Suiveur D’antoine Coypel
The Persian king Ahasuerus married Esther for love without knowing that she was Jewish. Haman, the enemy of Esther and the Hebrews of the kingdom, obtained their condemnation. Esther then appeared before the sovereign and announced to him that she was Jewish herself and fainted in the arms of two servants. She then obtained the pardon of the Hebrews while Aman was put to death by the people. The scene depicted on the fan leaf recalls the moment when Esther fainted before Ahasuerus, furious at his audacity but worried and considerate in front of the emotion of his wife.
