"Large Portrait Of A Naval Ensign 1820-1840"
This portrait depicts a young naval officer, probably an ensign, standing on the deck of a ship. Dressed in the regulation uniform with a double row of gold buttons and wearing a cocked hat, he holds his ceremonial sabre, the symbol of his rank and commitment. The maritime background, where the ropes and masts of a ship can be seen, opens onto a sunset sky whose warm tones contrast with the sobriety of the uniform. This type of representation, common under the Restoration and the July Monarchy, testifies to the vogue for officer portraits in the 19th century in commemorative works.
The frame dates rather from the Napoleon III period.
Please note that the painting is in very good condition with old relining and some touch-ups. However, the frame is sold with some missing parts and wear on the gilding.
