Alphonse Charles Chigot joined the army in 1842 and participated in the Algerian campaign. After leaving the army in 1850, he studied at the Valenciennes Academy. He was a student of Potier and exhibited at the Salon after 1900. He mainly painted military subjects, as is the case for this painting, where he represents a Senegalese torailleur, posing in a winter landscape.
