Kobis & Lorence Large Wall Lamp 1950 (length 1 M 40)
Artist: Kobis & Lorence
Important wall light circa 1950 by -Kobis and Lorence- Dimensions: 1 m 40 long X 60 cm high. Beautiful sculptural composition forming a radiant bouquet composed of six gilded brass light arms with conical lampshades in perforated metal called rigitulle in the style of Mathieu Matégot. Good general and electrical condition.
Kobis & Lorence, editors and designers of lighting active in France in the 1950s, distinguished themselves by a bold approach where the lighting became both a source of light and a sculpture. Their style, part of the Mid-Century Modern movement and open to Space Age inspirations, combines geometric rigor with formal fantasy. Their work is not limited to private housing: they participate in the modernization of many cinemas and theaters in France, designing spectacular lighting sets for halls, auditoriums and foyers. In these public spaces, their monumental pendant lights, perforated metal wall sconces, and tripod floor lamps with adjustable reflectors created an atmosphere that was both functional and theatrical, transforming light into a veritable setting. These interventions marked the visual identity of many cultural spaces of the time, bringing the public the experience of luminous modernity. Among their major achievements are the multi-armed pendant light in brass and lacquered metal, the luminous spheres inspired by the Sputnik, and their graphic wall lights playing with shadow and cutout. These pieces, designed for modern interiors as well as public spaces, embody the creative impulse of the 1950s and confirm Kobis & Lorence's place among the major players in post-war French lighting. Today, their creations are sought after by collectors and exhibited in galleries, testifying to an era when light became an aesthetic manifesto, both domestic and monumental.
