"Moses Powder Compact, Crossing The Desert, By Line Vautrin, In Gilded Bronze Circa 1950"
Line VAUTRIN (1913 - 1997) is a world-renowned French artist and designer of jewelry and decorative objects. The daughter of a bronze artist, she proved to be a precocious artist, who would prove to be original and independent of the artistic conventions of her time. Revealed by her jewelry collection at the 1937 Universal Exhibition, which allowed her to open a boutique on the Champs Elysées, she has since created unique, strong, highly identifiable pieces, imbued with freedom, imagination, lyricism and poetry, but also playfulness and humor, referring to poems, concepts, hidden messages, suggested or engraved.....Particularly innovative, she created a new material: "talosel", which can be found on many of her works, including the particularly sought-after "witch mirrors"....The invention of this material and her creative universe earned her the nickname "metal poetess". Her independent and mischievous character is found even in the signature of her works: sometimes bearing the shortened signature “bi”, sometimes “joux”, or “LV” on her jewelry, many of her works are simply not signed, the artist thus displaying a non-conformist and casual approach to her art. We present here a powder compact, this artist having created a wide range of decorative objects and for personal use…it is designed in her favorite material, gilded bronze, with such a beautiful and particular patina…which makes this object entirely representative of her art, although this powder compact is not signed. Its irregular shape gives it a unique character. Live VAUTRIN refers here to the biblical story of the exodus of the Israelite people, their flight from Egypt and the crossing of the desert which followed, by means of scenes on the entire lid, with in its center one of the most famous episodes of “the opening of the waters of the Red Sea”.
