"Virgin And Child In Polychrome Wood - France - 16th Century "
Beautiful representation of the Virgin and Child, carved in wood and still partially covered in its original polychromy with gold highlights. Mary, standing, supports the Child Jesus on her left arm; both have expressive faces, with wide eyes and pink-tinged cheeks, typical of late Gothic art evolving towards the Renaissance. The Virgin's mantle, decorated with painted and gilded damask motifs, suggests a careful commission intended for a private altar or oratory. This type of Virgin and Child, very widespread at the turn of the 16th century, illustrates popular piety and the diffusion of protective images in rural homes and chapels. Despite gaps and wear (missing hand, chips, cracks), the ensemble remains powerful due to the quality of the modeling of the faces and the survival of the original colors.
