Against an indeterminate background, we see the bust of a lady, her head turned slightly to the left. In the lower right corner, we can see the painter's signature and the date of completion (February 1897). As in the rest of Europe, portraiture was a very popular genre in 19th-century Spain, mainly thanks to social changes (the rise of the upper middle class, etc.) that influenced aesthetics. Hence the degree of intimacy that emerges from the painting, distinct from the "official portraits" preferred by the nobility. ·
