Biography
Flavio Poli (1900 – 1984) was an Italian artist renowned for his glass creations.
Born in 1900, he trained at the Istituto d’Arte di Venezia and began his career as a ceramist. In 1929, he joined IVAM(Industrie Vetraie Artistiche Murano) as a glassware designer. In 1934, he became artistic director of Barovier, Seguso & Ferro (later Seguso Vetri d’Arte), where he developed the celebrated sommerso style — glass with multiple transparent layers, one over the other.
After three years, he became a partner in the company, which he left in 1963. From 1964 to 1966, he headed the artistic glass division of the Società Veneziana di Conterie e Cristallerie. He died in 1984.
Poli’s works are held in major collections worldwide, including the Murano Glass Museum, the National Gallery of Victoria (Australia), the MoMA in New York, and numerous private collections.
